VIDOR Festival – Bringing New Experiences Every Year
This year, the Móricz Zsigmond Theatre is organizing the VIDOR Festival in Nyíregyháza for the 25th time. The VIDOR Festival – the National Celebration of Cheerfulness and Joy – is traditionally a nine-day multidisciplinary arts festival held every year at the end of August (this year from August 21 to 29). In the spirit of cultural accessibility and equal opportunity, the festival is open to everyone, with 80 percent of its programs completely free of charge.
Year after year, new festival venues are introduced. In addition to the traditional world music concerts, literary discussions, readings, puppet theatre performances, street performers, and visual arts exhibitions, audiences can now also enjoy performances by some of Hungary’s most popular contemporary music artists.
Every year, the organizers strive to bring the very best comedy productions from Hungarian theatres to the audience of Nyíregyháza. This showcase of the masters of comedy makes the competition program of the happiest week of the year not only a celebration for audiences, but also for the theatre profession itself, attracting increasing media attention year after year.
The VIDOR Festival is one of Hungary’s most prestigious and most visited multidisciplinary cultural events, welcoming between 130,000 and 160,000 visitors annually. The festival has been awarded the title of “Qualified Festival” and has also received the international EFFE Label certification. At the 2019, 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025 Marketing Diamond Awards organized by the Hungarian Marketing Association, the Móricz Zsigmond Theatre received the Marketing Diamond Award for its marketing activities related to the VIDOR Festival.
VIDOR is the most significant cultural event and main attraction of Nyíregyháza and the Northern Great Plain region. It generates substantial tourism during the late summer post-season period and provides important additional revenue for local businesses. In recent years, among all Hungarian festivals, it has done the most to ensure cultural accessibility, bringing high-quality culture to everyone regardless of their financial, social, or health situation. As a result, even those who cannot afford concert tickets can enjoy performances by internationally renowned stars free of charge.
The management of the Móricz Zsigmond Theatre, entrusted with organizing the festival, continuously seeks to renew the multidisciplinary event and introduce new elements year after year. The festival also announces a competition for musical comedies among theatres. In addition to prose comedies, the “Musical VIDOR Summer” program now presents outstanding musical comedy productions throughout the summer at the Rózsakert Open-Air Stage, where they also compete as part of the festival program.
Each year, the organizers aim to offer audiences not only a colorful and high-quality competition program, but also a wide range of musical events, street theatre performances, and other cultural highlights full of memorable experiences. Visitors can also discover just how enjoyable it is to spend a few days — or even more than a week — as guests in Nyíregyháza.
